Vampy Weekend - I Think Ur A Contra.
“My revolution thoughts, your little arrows of desire I want to trace them to the source, and the wire. But it’s not useful now, since we’ve both made up our minds. You’re going to watch out for yourself and so will I”
Vampire Weekend - Contra - Review

I was really looking forward to what Vampire Weekend could follow up with, although hesitant because of the nature of things I was expecting nothing quite like what they have delivered. It’s actually everything you hope for and more out of a sophomore album. More times than not sophomore releases aren’t this good. Vampire Weekend has actually kicked it up gotten more absurd in their lyrics, they have stayed true to what made them famous in the first place. It almost seems as though they gotten more strange and more ambitious, which is a great thing.
“Horchata,” catches right back where VW left off on their previous album, with the warm calypso afropop stylings that made them famous. “White Sky” among other songs here remind me strongly of a Paul Simon song. I’m not sure what they were thinking on “California English” the auto tune effect really is annoying, it’s an interesting song otherwise, they seem to be embracing their well off upbringing. Agreed with every other reviewer out there the most accessible song is “Giving Up the Gun” it really could be a big hit for them. The last three tracks stand out to me. Gun, Diplomat’s Son, and Contra seem to me the best representation of this album.
Overall, I really think this album has huge depth, there’s a lot of great moments, and it’s not an upgrade to their debut, but it’s a great accompaniment to what seems to be a bright future of music.
If you haven’t already heard, Vampire Weekend releases their new album next week (January 11th). This is the video from the single off the new album, Cousins. Buy Contranext week!
